Manuela Veloso leads the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University, driving research focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Veloso and her students research on autonomous robots, in particular mobile service robots that navigate multi-floor buildings and interact with humans and learn from their experience. Veloso will present work on the concrete CoBot service robots that autonomously navigate in the university office buildings, being able to integrate the understanding of sensory data, decision making, and actuation. In addition to responding to pick-up-and-delivery task requests from humans, the CoBot robots interact with humans in a symbiotic autonomy way, in which they overcome their limitations by asking for help from humans. Furthermore they are able to explain their autonomous experience in response to human queries. Veloso will present her work as a new challenging human-AI interaction, which can be of relevance in a wide variety of domains.
