A platform to success: The open digital bank of the future
What does the future of banking look like, and does that future have a place for ‘traditional’ incumbents? ING has always been a step ahead when it comes to digital banking, but how does it remain relevant when fleet-footed fintechs and  Big Tech titans are setting the standard for what customers expect from financial services? In this keynote address, ING CEO Ralph Hamers shares his vision of the future, and explains the bold steps ING is taking to make that vision a reality. Those include a company-wide innovation approach and a way of working more in common with successful startups than banking behemoths. Ralph’s story goes from purpose to platforms, and from banking to beyond banking, taking in distributed ledger technology, fintech collaboration, Open Banking and even love – with a couple of exciting announcements thrown in for good measure.

It’s about the customer, stupid
The proliferation of digital technologies is transforming customer expectations.  In the rush to get ahead, it is sometimes easy to lose focus on the core reason for developing a service: addressing the needs of customers.  In this session, Andy Maguire, Group COO HSBC, talks about how HSBC has structured its technology agenda around putting customers first, covering what it has learnt along the way in mobilising a digital organisation and how understanding expectations around robotics and platforms, to name just two examples, will be key to realising customer benefits.  Andy will also cover the bank’s work with fintech partners, including its Technology Advisory Board, as well as its own initiatives around the innovation agenda, and offer advice to those fintechs wanting to partner with banks on customer propositions.

Money is not a dirty word
Innovation in banking is rich in the language of ecosystems, partnerships and collaboration. It creates an illusion of inclusion, at the business end of the spectrum, and an openness to RnD and exploration without a razor sharp focus on PnL.

Business model innovation departments and a variety of activity, from investment to JVs, in propositions that make money differently to the core also creates the illusion of openness and fluidity. But the whole point of innovating was to stay in the game, to make money, to keep ahead. So all this openness is either not fully real or fully misguided.

It is time we discussed monetisation models and the challenges some partnerships present to making money. It is time we talked profitability structures and playing the same game by the same rules. And it’s time we all said what we really think about when and how you should talk money when speaking to a startup, a customer or a banker.

It’s what we are here for and it’s not a dirty word.

Make technology great again. AGAIN
In this high adrenaline performance, you’ll confront the persona of a malicious hacker and the disconnect between pursuing the prize of data and the individuals and businesses that are put at risk in the process. From billions lost in ICOs to political mania caused by the misuse of data, hacking is in the news everyday. Ralph Echemendia will explore the threats and challenges of data ownership and address the implications of recent scandals. When the valuation of tech giants relies on the data they collect and store, what happens if this data is stolen before they find a way to monetise? As the balance of power of data ownership changes, will the tech giant’s control of data diminish before they find the business models to justify their valuations? Be prepared to be amazed as Ralph Echemendia and Criminology academic Dr Mary Aiken, shed light on the dark arts of cyber crime. There will be a performance on Privacy by Hennessy Echemendia.

Changing habits, super-charging growth
By 2020, nearly 80% of China will be swiping, scanning or tapping to perform transactions as small as buying street food, to big-ticket items such as hotel rooms, driving $7-8 trillion worth of sales volume in the process. As transferring money becomes easier and cheaper, does China’s current mobile payment revolution offer the rest of us a vision of the future?

The convergence of a customer’s social, retail and financial life is transforming the way we pay day-to-day. Behind Alipay, dubbed a “super lifestyle app for the masses”, is Ant Financial, which is growing its already massive open TechFin platform, enabling payments and financial services to be integrated into various scenarios across different kinds of online devices, across different countries. The success of this low-cost, low-fuss technology rests on Ant Financial’s now world-renowned tech capabilities and service architecture.

The goal? To give consumers and SMEs equal access to payments and financial services anytime, anywhere and without any obstacles. Focussing on five key areas, Blockchain, AI, Security, IoT and Computing (BASIC), AliPay is already bringing the mobile payment revolution to European soil and it’s gaining traction. How to build a company that makes us behave: The lemonade story
One of the most valuable yet unrecognized contributors to a well-functioning society is trust. It's a lubricant, but unfortunately we often do not recognize how useful and important it is. In fact, most of our financial institutions and systems are built to bring out the distrust, creating vicious cycles and conflicts of interests that ultimately bring out the worst in all of us. As we move to the digital economy over larger distances, trust is even more important. We must treat trust as a social good, and understand that every time someone betrays the public's trust, they are not only hurting society, but they are also eroding the value of trust. Building tomorrow’s companies must be built on mechanisms that will help create, sustain, and build trust. Lemonade, a tech company reinventing insurance, is an example of a company designed to bring out the best in people, and uses trust as one of its main pillars. This model, built on behavioural economics and AI, removes the conflicts of interest, and is reinstating trust as a social good.
