GDPR, PSD2: Data, droids and drama
It is no surprise that the droids R2D2 and C3PO have been the only major characters represented in every Star Wars movie. The importance of data, which drives them, provided high drama. Most recently, GDPR and PSD2 have raised the prospect of a new consumer-centric dawn. This panel will bring the drama with a deep view of these regulatory initiatives.

Around the world (of blockchain) in 80 days
Jules Verne’s classic novel, “Around the World in 80 Days” took Phileas Fogg, and readers, around the world on a 20k bet to see if it could be done in 80 days. Would the bet today have been done in cryptocurrency? How amazed would Phileas have been with the range of blockchains and dramatically varied viewpoints about their regulation? This session will lift the Fogg on this important new sector.

How to deal with trust and customer consent in a cynical and scrutinised world
In recent months much as been said, taught and debated about GDPR: when is it applicable and to whom? How to build a ‘fine immune’ process? How to implement the law top to bottom in the organisation? However, the broader societal debate is quickly overtaking this narrow line of thinking. BADD (Big, Addictive, Anti-Competitive and Damaging to Democracy) behaviour puts every company under scrutiny and not only in the sharp visor of the regulator but of its entire – and active – user community, represented by politicians and activists. In this session we will focus on creating a much wider and strategic approach to GDPR, which is merely the beginning of many laws to come towards and approach that is consent centric and built on gaining and sharing trust with your audience. From compliance to societal acceptance. From vision to implementation – mind openers and takeaways.

How to exploit data under new regulatory frameworks
Data and analytics offer tremendous potential for banks to create value – both to reinvent and enrich the customer experience but also to transform internal processes. Yet, few banks are so far winning with data and struggle to materialize the benefits due to several hurdles – notably a gap in customer trust to really open up the data vault, internal complexity at banks and new regulatory constraints. In this session, industry leaders will show-case how they are winning with data. The panelists will share experiences on potential benefits, the particular hurdles they faced and how they have enabled overcoming these hurdles to ultimately create a win-win for banks and their clients.

The state of RegTech: Boardroom considerations
RegTech is the new darling of FinTech. Established players and startups are entering into financial services regulatory affairs, reporting, compliance and control. RegTechs and wider FS ecosystem see an opportunity to use untapped sources of data to address the misdemeanours of the past. The hypothesis is that RegTechs can provide insight into regulatory requirements, transparency in compliance, greater control and agility to respond to changing regulatory and market environment. The emerging ecosystem of RegTech service, data and technology providers is fragmented, how do they with Regulators, Central Banks and wider FS Market work together to realise the potential benefits glimpsed though the RegTechs?

The fireside chat explores what regtech means (and doesn’t), whether it’s helping the relevant start-ups to position themselves under this banner, and how incumbents feel about it. We also discuss the broader opportunity for start-ups to address regulatory challenges and in which cases, if any, they may be uniquely qualified to do so. Finally, we touch on the maturity of the market and whether buyers are actually moving beyond the sandbox stage.

Are sandboxes broken?
Sandboxes are being created across every country, but who is really benefitting? Does having a profusion of companies who wish to sandbox indicate that your policies are not working, and if so, what should be done about it? Sandboxes are the easiest and more visible way for regulators to get involved – real involvement or marketing involvement, yet to be defined – in the startup adventure. As FinTechs deal often with regulated processes, the government-driven sandbox is a great way to test the new solutions without jeopardizing the day-to-day business-as-usual. The risk is moving to a third dimension where everything is tested in the sandbox, good buzz is made about it as “a very progressive regulator allowing “almost” everything to be tested” but nothing or little is really brought to the real world, implemented and industrialize with the risk of changing the modus-operandi. The real opportunity is to use the sandbox for what is stands “a place to test fast and move out fast” to the real world where real problems, friction, hackers, and real regulations will make or break quickly any initiative tested in the safe environment of a sandbox.  What is the right approach to sandboxes: industry, international, or none of the above?

The world in debt: RegTech meets Machine Learning for new customer insight
High personal unsecured debt levels are stressing economies around the world. In response, UK has now placed the equivalent of a “do no harm” requirement on lenders which impacts their actions on both current and future customers. However, lenders are hard pressed to observe what is unobservable – affordability factors. While traditional risk tools have been in play for decades, learn from FICO how data, machine learning and a new formulation of the problem can measure underlying consumer financial stress to drive initiatives for responsible growth.
